RN to MSN-FNP Online Program Careers and Outcomes

Online FNP Program Career Stats

A Financially Rewarding Career That is in High Demand

Salaries earned by MSN Family Nurse Practitioners are typically higher than those earned by an RN or BSN-prepared nurse. The 2018 Nurse Practitioner Compensation Survey conducted by the AANP indicates that the average total annual income (which includes base salary, productivity bonuses, incentive payments) for full-time NPs was $109,021.

The average NP total salary is approximately $35,500 more than the 2017 average annual salary of a registered nurse at $73,550. By 2026, more than 56,100 nurse practitioner positions are expected to be created (according to the BLS).

Fill the Growing Need for Primary Care as a Family Nurse Practitioner

Graduates of an RN-MSN-FNP program help fulfill a growing need for primary care providers by becoming nurse practitioners. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has predicted a shortage of more than 20,000 primary care physicians by 2020.

Family Nurse Practitioners are filling the primary care gap left by physicians, providing more access to primary care and helping to care for underserved populations including those in rural communities.

High Career Satisfaction and Autonomy

Family Nurse Practitioners enjoy a high job satisfaction rate, with nearly 77% of NPs reporting they were satisfied or very satisfied with their employment in 2018, according to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). FNPs also enjoy a low unemployment rate of .7% according to, five times lower than the national average.

FNP was rated as #5 of the Best Healthcare Jobs and #7 of the Top 100 Best Jobs according to U.S. News & World Report, 2019. Family nurse practitioners enjoy more professional autonomy and independent decision-making than RNs. Some states grant prescriptive privileges to FNPs. FNPs can also provide a variety of primary care services.

Other Options for BSN-Prepared or MSN-Prepared Nurses

For nurses who have completed a BSN degree, we offer a Master of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner online program. If you already have an MSN degree and are interested in becoming a family nurse practitioner, we offer an online Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate program.

Earn Your RN to FNP Online Degree and Meet the Growing Demand for Primary Care Providers

Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) are in high demand as the number of primary care physicians fails to keep pace with the needs of a growing and aging population. Registered nurses who earn their RN to NP degree can help fill the primary care provider shortage gap while unlocking career benefits like increased autonomy, higher pay, and regular working hours.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC 2018), the projected shortage of primary care physicians is expected to reach as high as 49,300 by 2030. RN to NP programs are helping to address this growing crisis by empowering registered nurses to become family-focused, holistic primary care providers. Carson-Newman’s RN to MSN online program is specially designed to prepare RNs with the knowledge and clinical expertise they need to confidently take the Family Nurse Practitioner National Certification exam upon graduation and thrive as a certified FNP.

One of the key benefits of earning your RN to MSN degree online is that you can transition from RN to Nurse Practitioner in a flexible, online course format with no mandatory login times. The degree program is designed for working registered nurses who have a regionally-accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), also known as an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN), or a Nursing Diploma from an NLN- or CCNE- accredited nursing program.

Carson-Newman’s online RN to MSN-FNP degree program allows you to upgrade your ADN or ASN to a Master’s Degree (MSN) in just over four years while earning your Bachelor's of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN) degree along the way. ADN to MSN online programs like the RN to MSN-FNP offered by Carson-Newman are a great way to go from ADN to FNP by earning both a BSN and MSN-FNP degree while continuing to work as a full-time RN.
